The JC Schools Difference Maker Award is presented to staff and students who make a difference in their schools and our community; those individuals who go above and beyond to exemplify #JCStrongerTogether. Nominate a Staff Difference Maker here! Nominate a Student Difference Maker here!

JC Schools will thank all Difference Makers nominated, and some, like those pictured below, will be recognized monthly at the JC Schools Board of Education meeting. We love to spotlight Difference Makers that are tied to each of our three organizational pillars: Learning, Partnerships and Stewardship.

Callie Spurgeon, 5th Grade Teacher at Pioneer Trail
    Submitted by: Madison Warren, colleague

    Callie Spurgeon

Since coming to Pioneer Trail, Callie has been an incredible leader, mentor and coworker. Her outgoing personality lets her make lasting connections with staff and students alike. Callie works continuously to make her classroom a safe and warm environment for her students. For example, her use of flexible seating and lighting give the students a different setting to learn in and therefore more excited to come in each day. Callie always greets her students with a smile and a high five at the door each morning and seems to share a little special moment with every one of them as they come in.

As a coworker, Callie is the first to volunteer to help or create a resource. One day after school I couldn't figure out an interactive activity I wanted to do and Callie took time out of her day to explain the lesson and even how to execute it specifically for my students. Callie has also spearheaded the project of organizing the entire fifth grade into reading groups. This has enabled us to create flexible grouping reading groups and therefore be more effective with our instruction.

Callie is a difference maker because of her passion for education and people. Her joy for teaching creates a more positive and upbeat atmosphere not only for our team but our "pod" of 4th and 5th grade teachers. I believe she changes the lives of those she works with and has more incredible accomplishments in her future.

  • Delanie Benke, 6th Grade Student at TJMS
Submitted by:  Kelsey Hile, TJMS PE Teacher

    Delanie Benke

Delanie is the definition of a difference maker. We recently had a new student arrive at TJ who knew very little, if any English. When we began our Fitnessgram testing, Delanie noticed our new student didn't have a partner. She decided to step out of her comfort zone, and take the student under her wing. She paired up with her through every one of our tests. Delanie also has been a positive role model in this students life by showing her the TJ way. Since Delanie has come into this student's life, she has blossomed. You can see her smiling and participating in everything we do. Delanie, it takes someone special to do what you have done and we appreciate your kindness and compassion you are showing. Keep being a difference maker!
