Board of Education - Notice of Vacancy

The Jefferson City School District (JC Schools) Board of Education formally accepted the resignation of Erika Leonard on Wednesday, December 10th, 2025.

The district will accept applications for the vacancy from Thursday, December 11th through Wednesday, January 7th. Applicants will then be reviewed for discussion at the January 8th board meeting.

Applications will be accepted in person at the Jefferson City School District offices at 315 E. Dunklin on the following dates:

December 11-12, 2025 (8 a.m. - 3 p.m.)
December 15-18, 2025 (8 a.m. - 3 p.m.)
December 19, 2025 (8-10 a.m.)
December 22-29, 2025 (**closed**)
December 30, 2025 (3-5 p.m.)
December 31, 2025 - January 2, 2026 (**closed**)
January 5-7, 2026 (8 a.m. - 3 p.m.)

If chosen for the vacancy, the individual will serve as a board member through April of 2027, at which time the vacant seat will be open for election to fulfill the remaining one-year of the term.

Board members are expected to attend regularly scheduled monthly meetings (view 2025-2026 meeting dates) and the occasional special or committee meetings as needed. The position is unpaid.

Filing will not occur on days that the school district's offices and schools are closed due to inclement weather or holidays. Please check with the Board Secretary at 573-659-3012 if schools have been closed or listen to announcements on the local television and radio stations.

Board candidates must be citizens of the United States, resident taxpayers of the district who have resided in Missouri for one year, at least 24 years of age, eligible to hold office in accordance with Missouri law, including Section 561.021, RSMo, (including but not limited to – not serving a sentence or period of probation for a felony or a crime that if committed in Missouri would be a felony, have never pled guilty or nolo contendere nor been convicted under Missouri law or the law of another jurisdiction of a felony connected with the exercise of the right of suffrage), not registered or required to be registered as a sex offender under Missouri law, Sections 589.400-.425, RSMo, and will file all required campaign disclosure reports for all previous elections as a candidate and will have paid all fees assessed by the Missouri Ethics Commission.

Successful candidates are required to complete 18 and half hours of board member training, within one year of being elected, for district accreditation purposes. There are no filing fees or petitions required. Candidates must comply with the election campaign expenditures laws.
