JC Schools Announces New Chief of Learning Shelby Scarbrough

Jefferson City School District today announced that Shelby Scarbrough has been promoted to the position of Chief of Learning. Mrs. Scarbrough will succeed the district’s current Chief of Learning, Dr. Brian Shindorf, who is planning to retire at the conclusion of the 2019-2020 school year (June 30th, 2020).

“Our district is at a time of critical transition as we continue striving for improvement in the areas of achievement, literacy, and behaviors to ensure success for all of our students,” said Jefferson City School District Superintendent Dr. Larry Linthacum. “The combined experience Shelby Scarbrough brings as a classroom teacher, a building principal, and most recently as our Director of Human Resources, will strongly position JC Schools to continue our forward progress towards our goal of becoming a premier school district.”

“I am tremendously excited for this opportunity to continue serving our district as Chief of Learning,” Shelby Scarbrough said. “Leading the Department of Human Resources has given me a unique perspective on what is required by our district to recruit and retain quality employees. As Chief of Learning, I can use that perspective to go a step further and work with intention on what is required to ensure we are continually providing the highest quality of education for our students in the classroom.”

“There is no doubt that the Jefferson City School District has experienced positive growth under the leadership of Brian Shindorf,” said Superintendent Dr. Larry Linthacum of outgoing Chief of Learning Dr. Brian Shindorf. “We are sincerely appreciative of the time he has devoted to our district, and we wish him the best in his well-earned retirement.”

Dr. Brian Shindorf joined the Jefferson City School District in 2016 and spent his first year as the Director of Elementary Education before assuming the role of Chief of Learning in 2017. Dr. Shindorf plans to retire from JC Schools at the conclusion of the 2019-2020 school. He began his career in 1986 in St. Joseph, Missouri and later earned both Masters and Specialists degrees in school administration, along with a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis. Dr. Shindorf spent seven years as an elementary principal and later became the Director of Elementary Education for the St. Joseph School District, a position he held for 10 years prior to relocating to Jefferson City.

“I am thankful for the opportunities and experiences the field of education has provided me. I’ve worked with incredibly talented people throughout the course of my career, and I will forever appreciate the patience and kindness shown to me,” Dr. Brian Shindorf said. “Jefferson City Schools has been a welcoming place to work. I appreciate the support of the staff and wish the district success moving forward.”

Shelby Scarbrough began as the district’s Director of Human Resources in July of 2017. She is in the 25th year of her career in education, having worked as an elementary teacher, a middle school science teacher, a middle school assistant principal & activities director, and a middle school principal before joining JC Schools. Mrs. Scarbrough is currently working on her Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis through the University of Missouri. She will assume the position of Chief of Learning on July 1, 2020, ahead of the 2020-2021 school year.
