An End of Year Message from Superintendent Dr. Larry Linthacum

Hello JC Schools Families,

This week marks the highly unusual end to our 2019-2020 school year. When we began the year this past August, none of us could have imagined the current circumstances we find ourselves in.

I want to applaud you for everything you have done to help your student remain engaged in learning since our COVID-19 closure began on March 18th. Many of you did so tirelessly, while also working from home, adapting to the challenges of virtual instruction, and managing the emotional stress of living through an unprecedented pandemic.

This pandemic has changed our approach to education in the past several months, but it should not overshadow the incredible accomplishments that have been made throughout the course of this school year. A year that saw the opening of Capital City High School, the celebration of a fully-renovated and significantly enhanced Jefferson City High School campus, improvements to our students’ reading scores, a decrease in district wide student office referrals, and countless heartwarming student success stories in school buildings across our district, to name a few.

While there are still many uncertainties about what the 2020-2021 school year will bring, there are a few commitments I can make to you at this time:
  • There are no plans at this time to alter the start date (August 24) of the 2020-2021 school year;
  • District leaders will remain in touch with local and state health departments, fellow district leaders across the state and nation, and education organizations offering guidance on reentry planning for employees and students;
  • A parent survey will be distributed next week to collect some initial feedback on how families are feeling about the start of school in regards to health and safety - your responses will be helpful as decisions are made about the 2020-2021 school year;
  • We will continue consulting a variety of expert sources while planning for multiple in-seat and virtual scenarios for the start of the school year. We anticipate this will take several more weeks/months to finalize and we appreciate your patience.

The circumstances surrounding the future of the COVID-19 situation present many more questions than answers. We remain fully committed to protecting the health and safety of our employees and students as we navigate these uncharted waters. There may be more tough decisions ahead as to how education is delivered amidst a pandemic, but if we all remain laser-focused on student learning we will emerge stronger together.

We appreciate your continued commitment as a member of our JC Schools family. I hope you have a wonderful summer and look forward to seeing your student again in August!

Thank you,

Superintendent Dr. Larry Linthacum
