LCMS Mathematics Rationale:  We strive to create life-long problem solvers who are confident in their application of mathematics by developing: number sense, appropriate use of technology, logical thought, and communication skills.

6th Grade Math: In sixth grade math students will have opportunities to think mathematically by giving them time to investigate, explore, question, and discover important mathematical concepts.  As students reflect upon their work, they will become more confident as problem solvers and will see the meaningfulness of mathematics in their lives.

Classroom Instruction and Assessment for Learning
Can you meet the target?  Students are given a list of current learning targets at the beginning of each unit.  These targets guide our instruction through the unit and are put on the board for students to refer to as we progress as well.  Lessons involve group instruction, classroom practice, independent practice, and game play to meet these targets.  Continuous tracking is done by students, so they can fully explain their level of understanding and where they need to go from there.

Students will be using Assessment for Learning to help them track their progress.  In this system
    0- No understanding
1- I'm getting it wrong, but I'm trying.
2- I'm getting there, but I'm still making mistakes.
3- I've got it!  (* This is the level we aspire to be)
    4- I can teach it!

    Coursework- 40%
Homework: Students will have homework most nights and those assignments will be checked the following day.  Homework is never collected early, so you can always ask to see it the night it is assigned.  Assignments in this category are recorded in the gradebook as complete or incomplete because practice is what matters! This allows parents and students to see the habits that are being formed.  Daily warm-ups will also be shown in this category.

    Assessments - 60%
Target Tickets:  A few times each week, students take a short assessment over one skill.  These tasks help the student and the teacher see where students are in their quest to meet each target, and also prepare intervention when needed.  Students that do not pass target tickets will have the ability to schedule time for reteach and retest.
Unit Quiz: At the end of each unit there will be a summative quiz.  This quiz will encompass all targets for the unit and students will prepare with a study guide.
