2017-18 JCPS Student Calendar

2017-2018 JCPS Student Calendar

The 2017-2018 calendar was approved by the Board of Education at their October 10, 2016 meeting.

2017-2018 Calendar Rationale

AUGUST 17: School Starts
  • School begins on a Thursday, allowing staff to have three full professional development days prior to students arriving. The two-day week also allows students to settle in and staff to perform general “housekeeping” tasks with their classes. Some people might consider this an “early” start to the school year, but it allows for school to end prior to Memorial Day (if the weather cooperates).

SEPTEMBER 4: Labor Day (no school)

SEPTEMBER 20: Early Release Day

  • Schools will dismiss two hours earlier than normal to allow staff to work collaboratively on things such as curriculum, student data and professional development.

OCTOBER 9: Professional Development Day (no school for students)

  • This is the only full-day professional development days during the fall semester. The day will be primarily used for staff to study the latest student achievement/MAP Test data. This day was moved to a Monday to coincide with the State of Missouri’s observance of Columbus Day and state employees’ day off work.

OCTOBER 18: Early Release Day

  • Schools will dismiss two hours earlier than normal to allow staff to work collaboratively on things such as curriculum, student data and professional development.

OCTOBER 27: Staff Compensation Day (no school)

  • Staff will have worked two parent-teacher conference nights. This day is contractual compensation for those added hours.

NOVEMBER 8: Early Release Day

  • Schools will dismiss two hours earlier than normal to allow staff to work collaboratively on things such as curriculum, student data and professional development.

NOVEMBER 22-24: Thanksgiving Break (no school)

DECEMBER 22: Last Day before Break – 3-Hour Early Release for Students & Staff

  • Schools will dismiss three hours earlier than normal on this last day before the Christmas/Holiday break.

DECEMBER 25 – JANUARY 1: Christmas/Winter Break (no school)

JANUARY 2: Professional Development Day (no school for students)

  • This is one of two full-day professional development days during the spring semester. District professional development coordinators indicated having this day as early as possible during the spring semester to allow for ample prep for the April MAP testing dates was ideal. This also extends the Christmas/Holiday Break for families.

JANUARY 15: Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday (no school)

FEBRUARY 12: Early Release Day

  • Schools will dismiss two hours earlier than normal to allow staff to work collaboratively on things such as curriculum, student data and professional development. This Early Release Day was moved to a Monday to coincide with the State of Missouri’s observance of Lincoln’s Birthday and state employees’ day off work.

FEBRUARY 19: Presidents’ Day (no school)

  • Should the District incur a loss of one school day due to inclement weather BEFORE JANUARY 5th, Presidents’ Day will be used as a weather make-up day (school will be in session). If the District does not have a snow day before JANUARY 5th, SCHOOL WILL NOT BE IN SESSION ON PRESIDENTS’ DAY.

MARCH 2: Professional Development Day (no school for students)

  • This is the second of two full-day professional development days during the spring semester.

MARCH 14: Early Release Day

  • Schools will dismiss two hours earlier than normal to allow staff to work collaboratively on things such as curriculum, student data and professional development.

MARCH 26: Staff Compensation Day (no school)

  • Staff will have worked two parent-teacher conference nights the month before. This day is contractual compensation for those added hours. This date was chosen as to provide students and staff a full week of Spring Break.

MARCH 27-29: Spring Break (no school)

MARCH 30: Good Friday (no school)

MAY 16: Last Day of School – 3-Hour Early Release for Students (depending on use of weather make-up days)

  • Schools will dismiss three hours earlier than normal on this last day of school. Staff will work the remainder of the school day.

WEATHER MAKE-UP DAYS

  • Should the District incur a loss of one school day due to inclement weather BEFORE JANUARY 5th, Presidents’ Day will be used as a weather make-up day (school will be in session). If the District does not have a snow day before JANUARY 5th, SCHOOL WILL NOT BE IN SESSION ON PRESIDENTS’ DAY.
  • All other make-up days will be placed at the end of the school year to be used in this order: May 17, 21, 22, 23 & 24. May 18th and May 25th cannot be used as weather make-up days. JCHS is scheduled to host the State Track Meet the last two weekends in May and classes will not be able to be in session while doing so.
With this make-up day schedule, the likelihood of returning to school after Memorial Day is very low.
