The 2019-2020 calendar was presented to the Board of Education for a first-reading at their October 2018 meeting. The calendar was discussed at the November meeting, then had a final-reading and vote at the December 2018 Board of Education meeting.

    2019-2020 Calendar Rationale

    AUGUST 27: School Starts

    • School starts later this year to allow renovation crews at Jefferson City High School as much time possible to finish work prior to students returning to the building.
    • With school starting later, there is not the opportunity for professional development days during the school year like we usually have. Therefore, more professional development days were added prior to the start of the school year (six days now, instead of three).

SEPTEMBER 2: Labor Day (no school)

    SEPTEMBER 18: Early Release Day

    • Schools will dismiss two hours earlier than normal to allow staff to work collaboratively on things such as curriculum, student data and professional development.

    OCTOBER 16: Early Release Day

    • Schools will dismiss two hours earlier than normal to allow staff to work collaboratively on things such as curriculum, student data and professional development.

    NOVEMBER 20: Early Release Day

NOVEMBER 27-29: Thanksgiving Break (no school)

DECEMBER 20: Last Day before Break – 3-Hour Early Release for Students & Staff

    • Schools will dismiss three hours earlier than normal on this last day before the Christmas/Holiday break.

    DECEMBER 23 – JANUARY 3: Christmas/Winter Break (no school)

JANUARY 2-3: Staff Compensation Days (no school)

    • During the course of the school year, staff will work two parent-teacher conference nights. These days are contractual compensation for those added hours. Instead of taking time off immediately/shortly after those conference nights, these dates were chosen to provide students and staff two full weeks of Christmas/Winter break.

    JANUARY 15: Early Release Day

    • Schools will dismiss two hours earlier than normal to allow staff to work collaboratively on things such as curriculum, student data and professional development.

    WEATHER MAKE-UP DAYS:

State law requires school districts to include 36 hours of weather make-up time on their annual school calendars. However, new state legislation says that school districts only have to use those hours if they fall below 1,044 hours of student instruction. The proposed calendar includes 1,097 hours of student instruction. Therefore, JCPS would have to miss more than eight (8) days of school due to weather before any make-up hours have to be used. The likelihood of this happening is obviously extremely low.

That said, weather make-up hours are proposed on the following days (not listed in order of when they will be used):

    • Jan. 20, Feb. 17, April 10, May 21, May 26, May 27, May 28
