    Students enrolled in this course will enjoy project-based learning coupled with rigorous writing and reading assignments. English I is designed to prepare students for the English II EOC while covering the Missouri Learning Standards for English I. Throughout the course, students will develop critical reading and writing skills by analyzing a variety of texts, including novels, short stories, poetry, and nonfiction works. They will learn to craft structured analytical responses to literature, focusing on thesis development, textual evidence, and literary analysis. Emphasis will be placed on writing with clarity, organization, and depth of thought. Students will engage in discussions, close reading strategies, and collaborative activities that foster deeper comprehension and appreciation of literature. Additionally, they will strengthen their grammar, vocabulary, and research skills through targeted instruction and practice. To support learning, students will stay connected through Google Classroom and Infinite Campus, ensuring access to assignments, resources, and feedback.

    Red & Black Newspaper 

    The Red & Black Newspaper is a student-produced publication that highlights all things Jefferson City High School and the surrounding community. Through this course, students will take on the roles of journalists, editors, photographers, and designers to produce a monthly newspaper that informs, entertains, and engages readers. Students will develop skills in news writing, feature writing, opinion pieces, and investigative reporting while also learning the fundamentals of layout design, photojournalism, and digital media. They will conduct interviews, research topics, and collaborate to ensure accurate and compelling content. This course fosters critical thinking, creativity, and teamwork, preparing students for real-world journalism experiences. Whether covering school events, student achievements, sports, or community news, the Red & Black staff plays a vital role in keeping JCHS informed and connected.
