Character Education Principles

A good character education program is based these 11 principles, according to the CharacterPlus organization:
1. Promotes core ethical values and supportive performance values as the foundation of character2. Defines “character”comprehensively to include thinking, feeling, and behaviors3. Development of a comprehensive, intentional and proactive approach to character growth4. Creating a caring school community5. Providing students with opportunities for moral action6. Including a meaningful and challenging academic curriculum that respects all learners,developing their character and helps them to succeed7. Strives to foster students’ self motivation8. Engages the school staff as a moral community that shares the responsibility for character education and attempts to adhere to the same core values that guide the students9. Fosters shared moral leadership and long range support of the character education initiative10. Engages families and community members as partners in the character building effort11. Evaluates the character of the school,the school staff as character educators, and the extent to which students demonstrate good character
